Oyakodon
What would you call a dish involving sauteed egg with chicken nuggets thrown in, served on top of steamed rice? Chicken omelette? Nugelettes? Try "parent-and-child bowl." That's the literal translation of oyakodon. Oya means "parent," and ko is short for "child." In case you don't get it, the "parent" is the chicken, and the "child" is the egg. Don, meanwhile, comes from donburi, a deep round bowl. Any dish which involves a viand sitting on top of rice tends to end with don. Other examples are gyudon (beef bowl), katsudon (pork cutlet) or tendon (you guessed it, tempura-on-rice). It should be noted that all of these dons are fairly modern inventions, which weren't around when the Japanese had their feudal system with sword-bearing samurai and cowering peasants and all that. This much is obvious from the ingredients since, traditionally, the Japanese never ate mammals such as cows or pigs. Anyway, back to the oyakodon. One of the many wonderful things about Japan is the colorful Japanese language. Its nomenclature of choice for a fairly inexpensive, bland meal is based on the most gruesome twist imaginable.

Contributor's Note
When eating your parent-and-child bowl, lift the bowl to your lips with one hand, and shovel the parent-and-child into your mouth using your chopsticks. This is the authentic way to do it!
